The Bram Stoker Award for Non Fiction - the history

Joe Nassise and I, two alumni of the HWA Presidential hot seat, have been administrating a web site for a few years now called “Storytellers Unplugged,” which brings together (at any given time) about 30 authors of diverse genre, mindset, and talents to write essays about writing, the writing life, etc. This year, we have been honored as nominees for The Bram Stoker Award in non-fiction for that effort…in the past, the award has been given to the following list - a list I’d love to be part of:

1987 - Mary Shelley by Muriel Spark
1988 - No award
1989 - TIE: Harlan Ellison’s Watching by Harlan Ellison / Horror: The 100 Best Books by Stephen Jones & Kim Newman
1990 - Dark Dreamers by Stanley Wiater
1991 - Clive Barker’s Shadows of Eden by Stephen Jones
1992 - Cut! Horror Writers on Horror Film by Christopher Golden
1993 - Once Around the Bloch by Robert Bloch
1994 - No Award
1995 - The Supernatural Index by Michael Ashley & William Contento
1996 - H.P. Lovecraft: A Life by S.T. Joshi
1997 - Dark Thoughts: On Writing by Stanley Wiater
1998 - DarkEcho Newsletter, Vol. 5, #1-50 by Paula Guran, ed
1999 - DarkEcho edited by Paula Guran
2000 - On Writing by Stephen King
2001 - Jobs in Hell edited by Brian Keene
2002 - Ramsey Campbell, Probably by Ramsey Campbell
2003 - The Mothers and Fathers Italian Association by Thomas F. Monteleone
2004 - Hellnotes edited by Judi Rohrig
2005 - Horror: Another 100 Best Books by Stephen Jones & Kim Newman
2006 - TIE: Final Exits: The Illustrated Encyclopedia of How We Die by Michael Largo / Gospel of the Living Dead: George Romero’s Vision of Hell on Earth by Kim Paffenroth

It’s an illustrious group…Saturday we find out if I get to join.

  1. James Goodman Says:

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. :D

  2. David Says:

Thanks man. I’ll be on the computer, distance watching. The world has gotten much smaller…

    Dave

  3. Stanley Wiater Says:

    Gents–

Could have sworn in 2001 some bastard named Stanley Wiater won the award for the third time, in collaboration with Beth Gwinn.

    Good luck nonetheless.

    Stanley

  4. David Says:

You are senile Stan :) You won the award in ALTERNATE FORMS - not Non-Fiction…you got the year right! I took this straight off the HWA site, and since you were the second person to question something, I went back to check…

Thanks for the good wishes. I’m dying for it to be Saturday!

    David
