When Jesus went into the desert to be tempted by the devil, there were large chunks of time left out from the descriptions recorded in the accepted gospels.  In “A Candle in the Sun,” Lucifer raises a final temptation – a fallen angel in the guise of a woman.  Here name was Mary Magdalene, and when, instead of tempting Jesus with her flesh, she fell in love and sought redemption, she was cursed.  Through the words of the Book of the Gospel according to Judas Iscariot, and through her own memories, we follow Mary as she walks the streets and stories of the Gospel, drinking the blood of the faithful and seeking a salvation that seems beyond her grasp.

This is not just a vampire story, nor is it a religious story.  It is a tale that puts the word “faith” into perspective, a story told by one who did not need to believe in what she could not know, or see – but had walked the roads of both Heaven and Hell – and knew.  It is a story of sacrifice beyond measure.  This story was first published in STARSHORE magazine, many years ago.  It was reprinted in Year’s Best Horror XIX and several other times in anthologies and collections.  It was expanded in 1999 into the novel “This is My BLood,” also available throug this publisher.
