Site Moved, Words Flowing, His name is REALLY MIKE - GoDaddy Support
Well, we have successfully, more or lesss, moved our web sites from the aging dinosaur that is Hypermart to the snazzy - if a bit more commercial than I’d care for - new digs at Godaddy.com. We heard a lot of good and bad about GoDaddy from a lot of differnt places…but after searching all the other options I found, I came to the conclusion that you can find the same about most sites. Here are some reasons for moving.
Hypermart - about $100 a year. Lots of “space” - only five mysql databases - expensive and difficult to add subdomains - all tools antiquated - and here’s the big one. Most of the support is through e-mail, and it can take DAYS to get a response, which is usually something like, “can you send me please a screen shot of this error?” which is followed by more days waiting after you do. Just not good. I have had a good run at Hypermart, and a plus is that their ftp works very well. Slow loading pages and antiquated mysql support did them in for me. Seems like every site I build now needs a database. At GoDaddy we have 25 with Trish’s account and 10 with my account as well as unlimited websites we can add within the alotted space.
In addition to the huge increase in the number of databases, we can create mysql 4.x or 5.0 databases, which improves support options. The Mysql tools are up to date, the Google webmaster tools are integrated right into your control panel. The only downside I’ve found so far is that there seem to be some strange issues when using FTP to transfer directories. Files move over fine, but when copying folders with files in them, the site continually asks for re-authentication. Have had some pretty good luck using Filezilla to overcome this, but it’s still irritating.
Number one best thing about GoDaddy? When calling for support my longest wait has been about five minutes. Every person I spoke with was able to help me quickly and easily. When the man at the other end says “Hello, my name’s Mike,” it isn’t said in an Indian accent and they don’t repeat my name at the beginning and end of every senence. Friendly, intelligent helpdesk personnel go a LONG way with me.
So there you have it. We are running two domains… www.macabreink.com and www.danceswithwools.net - both with Wordpress sites up to date and running smoothly. When I get time to move one of my PHP only sites over, and get the e-mail up and running on their “premiere” e-mail service, I’ll report on that too.
I can see how the plethora of ads and offers could confuse someone going to GoDaddy, but once you cut through it and get busy working, it seems pretty solid.
