Quick American Idol Update - Simon & Co. at it Again
Every year it’s the same old thing. The judges start making commentary that just doesn’t fit the performances they have just witnessed. Good acts get panned and disasters get patted on the back. It’s as if they think by ignoring what they just saw and heard, they can change the reality of the sound and influence voting. As if anyone would listen to those three clowns.
Randy and Paula have had their time in the sun, but none of the three of them would know a good modern song if it were pumped into their head by mega-watt amplifiers. They are just too out of touch. Randy mixes up groups while pretending to be in the know about everything music - and what’s up with him trying to be some sort of young hip-hop stud? He’s ridiculous.
Paula is incoherent. She’s still cute, and she’s at least a little nicer for the contestants to deal with - she’s pointless as a judge though.
Simon can be counted on at times to actually say what should be said, though he’s far too callous and corrosive in doing it. But here’s the thing. Now they’ve thrown all of that out the window. Tonight Amanda the skunk-haired rock chick butchered Joan Jett. Let’s face it - if you can’t handle a Joan Jett vocal, you aren’t winning American Idol. What happens? Simon pretends to love it! Huh? It was only slightly better than last weeks disaster…the girl is a one-trick pony, and the world doesn’t need another Janis Joplin wannabe.
Then there’s the crazy-eyes chick singing a countrified version of Journey - they actually claimed to like THAT…it was mediocre at best, and she blew ALL the big notes…it’s sad.
My point is this - if you could ever trust the judges to say what they really believe, that time has passed. Now they have agendas, trying to get certain people to the next stage and get rid of others, and they do it as if no one will notice…while everyone does.
For my money, Josiah Leming was the best thing this year - fresh, original, and likely bound for a REAL career. I also like the kid with dreadlocks and the blond girl who sings like Carly Simon…because they show some passion and some personality beyond the Vegas singer-of-other-people’s-songs they seem to be after on this show…it’s a sad thing.
And yet we watch…

This is why we gave up watching. We tried one show this year. Not good.
But I do have to poke you for the Vegas comment. You know, The Killers are from Vegas. (Not that I’m that fond of The Killers, but they’re not a tribute act.)
