His grades had slipped. It wasn’t that he didn’t study; he read everything he could get his hands on. He knew things the teachers did not know, and imagined others. His parents worried when they saw his grades, and he didn’t try to explain. He closed his door, and he read. If he ignored them, they might not go away, but at least he was ignoring them.
Then his mother said: “We called the school.”
He said - nothing.
Then his father said: “Mr. Wheeler, the Chemistry teacher, is worried.”
He said nothing.
His mother and father started to say something at once…chuckled nervously. His mother said: ‘We want to have Mr. Wheeler for dinner.”
He smiled. He nodded. He went to his room and closed the door. His parents smiled and were relieved.
He started reading cookbooks…smiling at the framed book cover on his wall. A shame Thomas Harris didn’t do a cookbook…
They were having Wheeler for dinner…
