Mother’s Day … A Time for Treadmills and Tony’s Pizza

May 11th, 2008 by David

I am one of those lucky fellas that has his mom AND the mother of his children in the house, so Mother’s Day here is sort of a complicated affair. The first thing I have to do is pick up whatever we won from last night’s antique auction (we leave bids and either win, or don’t, but can’t bring ourselves to sit in amongst the pile of rednecks all evening to duke it out over boxes of junk). I think (maybe) we got a bunch of cool old magazines.

Next stop will take my son and I to Walmart to…

The Gingerbread Girl - The Audio Book - A review

May 8th, 2008 by David

Emily, the protagonist of Stephen King’s long short story (novella?) “The Gingerbread Girl,” started running when her baby died.  It isn’t a subject that’s covered much, but it seems to be a case of crib death - alive at night - dead in the morning without warning.  That sets the stage.  What follows is Emily’s fight back to normalcy and sanity.  Her husband fights back in different ways, at different speeds, and they mesh poorly, so Emily ends up by herself in a house by the bay - her father’s summer house.

In one section of the book, King talks about his process. His process is situational. You take a situation, like a woman and child trapped in a car by a rabid dog, you start writing about that situation, and you let it develop into a book…many of his books began this way, and he…

May 6th, 2008 by David

Today is the first day that my new short story collection, “Ennui & Other States of Madness” is available for preorder. ennui_large_1_.jpgI’m happy to say this one will be for sale in three states, and one of them is an affordable trade paperback! This is a massive collection, over 120,000 words of fiction, including a brand new novella and a couple of previously unpublished stories. The cover art is by the talented Mr. Don Paresi - the introduction was written by Brian Hodge. I’m thrilled to have this one coming out…it is (by request of the publisher) a “definitive” collection,…
