Author Sarah Monette - Twist the Genre Into New Shapes

02/15/08, 10:56 PM

In my never-ending quest (well, not any time soon, anyway) to interview all thesaram.jpg contributors over at Storytellers Unplugged, I have the pleasure of presenting my latest…five questions with author Sarah Monette. Sarah has some very interesting perspectives on fantasy, world-building, and writing in general.

Sarah Monette grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. She has a Ph.D. in English literature and insufficient…

2007 Bram Stoker Nominees - Guess Who Made the Cut?

02/15/08, 12:52 PM

Okay, as news goes, this doesn’t suck. Not only did I finally make my way back onto the final ballot for the HWA’s Bram Stoker Award - but I made it three times the same year! To say I am pleased would fall just a TAD short…you’ll find the three thing I am nominated for below - linked appropriately!

Final 2007…

Maria Alexander - Sins of the Sirens Interview #1

02/15/08, 8:29 AM

One of the coolest things about being a writer is the wide variety of acquaintances you “collect” over the years. With the expansion of the Internet, and the rises of “blogging” it has become increasingly easy to share this wealth, which brings me to the subject of this latest post.

Yesterday I posted my review of the group collection Sins of…

Sins of the Sirens

02/14/08, 9:38 AM

I’ve just posted my sort of lengthy review of the volume SINS OF THE SIRENS - a book put together by John Everson that contains short stories by four of the most talented ladies of darkness working today:  sirens_180.jpgLoren Rhoads, Maria Alexander, Mehitobel Wilson, and Christa Faust.  This book is available in an attractive trade paperback (if you want to ignore…

Fiction Valence - It’s Not Just the Edge, it’s WHICH Edge

02/13/08, 9:44 AM

This morning I was reading a short story by an author I admire.  I don’t think I’m going to get into which story, or which author, because it’s not germane to the topic at hand.  What matters is the epiphany gained through the reading.

One trait that authors seem to share is the ability to write just beyond their own experience. …

It is my distinct pleasure to present the next in my line of interviews.  Up this time for  five questions  is author Elizabeth Bear.  Bear is one of the monthly contributors to the group writing blog  Storytellers Unplugged  as well as a Producer, contributor to the Hyperfiction site

She has authored many novels in many realities, and I think you will all…

Don’t Write Street Scenes - Reality in Fiction is not Optional

02/12/08, 1:55 PM

I am doing a lot of reading and reviewing these days. I feel as if there is more to be gained from all of it than just an opinion on a particular author, or a particular work, and here is one tidbit that surfaced recently. It’s a flaw in many novels both by well-known authors, and newer writers breaking in,…

Barack Obama, Hillary and the Rest. Let’s Hear it for Clear Speech

02/11/08, 9:13 AM

I don’t pretend to have been keeping up as well as I should on the various presidential campaigns. I tend to file things away, and then, when the file is full enough for my brain to tell me it’s alright to make a stand, I form an opinion. Here is one from the files.

George W. Bush is either stupid, or…

RSS Scraping - Plagiarism - and Really, Who is Jeff Crouere

02/9/08, 9:35 PM

I’ve been trying to build up my blog traffic.  There are a million articles out there on how to get more hits, how to get your Google index ration optimized, and your ranking high on all the right spots…it’s frightening, confusing, and a time sink of astronomical proportion.

Yesterday I was checking my blog at Technorati.com.  This is a site where…

Probably the Coolest Car in the World. I WANT ONE.

02/8/08, 1:47 PM

This is a video showing what the new Tesla Roadster sounds like when driven … MAN those are cool cars. You’ll note one, I’m told, in the Iron Man trailer. How cool is this car? It’s in the trailer for a major motion picture, and the company didn’t even pay for product placement!
